【News】Big colorful balloons lift off in Ojiya city, Niigata Prefecture (March 5, 2017)

A couple of dozens of big colorful balloons flew high up in the air over the snow-covered rice fileds in the Chuetsu area of Niigata Prefecture. This year’s Ojiya Balloon Festival, the 41st one in its long history, was held on February 25 and 26, 2017, in Ojiya city, Niigata Prefecture. Visitors to the annual winter festival were invited to have a brief ride on a balloon offered by a local agricultural cooperative and to enjoy watching the skills of balloon operators competing in an amateur hot air balloon competition over the snowfield called “the Sea of Japan Cross Country Championship”. 【News】Try this new ancient-looking sweet gift from Chino, Nagano Prefecture! (March 1, 2017)

Many say they are too good to eat. They look exactly like the two national treasure “dogu” clay figurines produced during the Jomon Period and unearthed from Chino, Nagano Prefecture, but they are “yokan,” traditional Japanese sweet bean paste jellies, prepared by a long-established local confectioner based on the idea of local university students. The edible dogu are called “Kokuho Shio Yokan (National Treasure Salty Yokan)” and already popular. Baigetsu, the 90-year-old local confectioner, created the dogu-shaped yokan in two types: one in the shape of “Jomon no Venus (the Venus of Jomon)” and the other in the shape of “Kamen no Megami (the Masked Goddess)”. 【News】 White strawberries from Shizuoka proving popular in Tokyo (Feb. 28, 2017)

Suzuki Farm in Kakegawa, Shizuoka Prefecture, plans to increase cultivation of its white strawberries, which are marketed at a high price of 2,500 yen to 3,000 yen per box containing 15 to 18 berries. Now the strawberries are sold at some department stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The farm grew them experimentally last year, but plans to grow more this year because of strong sales. Although the farm considered exporting them to Hong Kong, it decided to concentrate on the domestic market due to their high unit price.
