The Japanese government and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party began considering revising the rice production adjustment program. Some government officials even indicated possible abolishment of the program, causing confusion among farmers. We urge the government to conduct cautious and cool-headed discussion, taking into account the current conditions of farmers. Masaki Shimizu Hoof trimmers gathered in Mito on Friday, October 25, to show off their skills at a national cow hoof trimming competition. 24 hoof trimmers of beef and dairy cattle representing 12 prefectures from five regions participated in the competition held by Japan Farriery Association. Tetsuhisa Fukami, 37, representing Kyushu, won the agricultural minister prize. The participants from Hokkaido to Kagoshima had associates hold cows to keep them restrained and carefully trimmed their hooves, using hatchets and hoof knives. 【News】 AEON starts quality assurance for cut flowers (Oct. 25, 2013)
Since the middle of this month, AEON Co., Ltd. began selling cut flowers with five-day quality assurance in 270 stores nationwide. It is attracting attention of flower growers and other retailers as the first such attempt by a major nationwide supermarket chain. When selling cut flowers, the stores will offer customers a small bag of quality preserver and explain appropriate ways to take care of them, including keeping water and vases clean. If the flowers wither within five days from purchase, the stores will either pay back the money or replace the flowers.
