TOKYO, April 21 — JA ZEN-NOH, the marketing arm of the JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives) group, has developed a domestically-produced premium wine, the first wine to be marketed under its Nippon Yell brand featuring Japan-made farm produce.
The wine was produced in cooperation with JA Fuefuki, a farm coop in Yamanashi Prefecture.
It is priced at 20,000 yen a bottle, the highest price among Nippon Yell brand products, and is sold at a duty-free shop in Haneda Airport in Tokyo.
JA ZEN-NOH, or the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations, is aiming to expand sales channels for domestically-produced items by marketing the product at the duty-free shop filled with inbound tourists, where high-priced Japan-made products sell well.
The wine is available in two types: Nippon Yell Kamiju, a red wine made from the Muscat Bailey A grape variety, and Nippon Yell Bimisaka, a white wine made from the Koshu grape variety.
New Yamanashi Wine Co., a subsidiary of JA, produced the wine using ingredients carefully selected in areas covered by JA Fuefuki.
The wine comes in an octagon-shaped box to give it a luxurious feel.
Five hundred bottles each of the two types of wine will be sold at a duty-free shop in Haneda’s Terminal 3 to departing international flight passengers who have completed boarding procedures.
“Products made in Japan are known for their high quality and foreign visitors’ buying motives remain strong,” said an official in charge of the store, adding that the wine is expected to be sold out by the end of this year.
