“Yubari Melons” produced in Yubari-shi, Hokkaido, well-known high-grade brand melons, were put up for a season-opening auction at the Sapporo City Central Wholesale Market on May 26. A package of two pieces of A-Grad Yubari Melon marked a record-high price of 3 million yen, breaking the previous record of 2.5 million yen. Yubari Melon was just registered under the Geographical Indication (GI) Protection System last year. The GI Protection System, administrated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), aims to guarantee high qualities of products which have unique values of specific regions. Tokyo Metropolitan prefectures and major cities jointly held “9 Governors and Mayors Summit Meeting” in Fukushima city on May 25. Agricultural Products Processing Research Institute of the Aomori Prefectural Technology Center, based at Rokunohe-machi, Aomori prefecture, has developed a new technology of preserving prepared pears for a long time, which are pared and cut into pieces, aiming to promote the use of preserved pears by confectionery and other businesses. After a pack of sliced pear pieces is vacuumed for preventing from turning brown, it is heated to restrain oxidization, which is thereafter cooled down to stop softening of the pear pieces.
