The Tokyo district court has dismissed a lawsuit brought by a civil society group that claims the Japanese government has violated the constitution by agreeing to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal. The court on June 7 also rejected the group’s request to block the government from signing the pact, explaining this is in the realm of executive power and a civil lawsuit cannot stop it. Moreover the judge said the plaintiffs failed to state a claim that the deal undermines basic human rights, because the TPP has not yet come into force. 【News】LDP sets up committee for JP-EU trade deal amid PM Abe’s push(June 7, 2017)

Japan’s governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has set up a committee to consult its members and stakeholders to ease anxiety over the Japan-EU free trade deal. The move coincides with a high-level push by the administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to wrap up the negotiations early in July. Japan and the European Union leaders are now aiming to reach a free trade agreement when both sides meet at the sidelines of the July 7-8 G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. 【News】Japanese Tofu industry to give clear-cut definition to Tofu items classified with soybean content (June 5, 2017)

The Japanese Tofu industry has begun to implement a campaign for establishing an accurate definition of Tofu items. The campaign has been led by the Regulation Drafting Committee on Tofu Fair Competition set up by a national organization of Tofu manufacturers in Japan. According to drafted definition on Tofu, items with the concentration of “solid soybean” more than 10 percent are to be classified into “Tofu,” while ones with 8-10 percent and ones with 6-8 percent are to be defined respectively as “prepared Tofu” and “processed Tofu.” These definitions will be authorized and announced at the end of March in 2019 after they are examined by the Japan Fair Trade … Continue reading

【News】Sushi shops in landlocked Saitama Prefecture offer vegetable sushi (June 2, 2017)

Thirty sushi shops in Saitama Prefecture started offering vegetable sushi using only vegetables produced in the prefecture and no seafood. The sushi industry association in the prefecture took three years to develop the product ahead of the Rugby World Cup scheduled to be held in Japan in 2019 and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, targeting foreign visitors which are increasing in number, as well as vegetarians and health-conscious people. 【News】Japanese government’s TV program to attract inbound tourists to “Noh-Haku” of farm stay tours (June 4, 2017)

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) plans to carry out a full-fledged campaign to promote “Noh-Haku” or “farm stay tours” in Japan for international tourists this year. MAFF’s “Noh-Haku” campaign is aiming at informing inbound tourists of great fun staying at a traditional Japanese farmer’s house to experience rural life in an agricultural community or a fishing village. Two kinds of 30-minute TV programs will be produced this year to be broadcasted on overseas TV channels, introducing traditional performing arts, local cuisines, farm works and peaceful country scenes in Japan.
