Japan likely to extend best-before dates to boost pork exports
TOKYO, July 30 ― Japan is planning to extend best-before dates for pork products in a bit to boost chilled exports, informed sources have said. The agriculture and health miniseries have set up a panel to look at hygienic controls abroad and review guidelines for setting best-before dates. The first meeting of the panel was held on July 17, hearing from meat exporters. The move coincides with the Japanese government’s goal, which aims to expand pork export value at 1.2 billion yen, or equivalent to 1,000 metric tons, by 2019. Japan’s pork exports have been steadily increasingly over recent years, totaling 720 million yen, or 622 metric tons, in 2017. … Continue reading

Japan’s Norinchukin invests to woo more Chinese tourists
TOKYO, July 24 ― The Norinchukin Bank, the cooperative financial arm of Japan’s largest farmers’ group, has invested in a startup to help attract more Chinese tourists in Japan. The Norinchukin Bank said on July 23 that it invested an undisclosed sum in Japan Foodie, also known as Nihon-bishoku, which offers a mobile app for Chinese tourists in Japan. Japan Foodie offers app services to Chinese tourists to browse restaurants, make reservations, and order in advance and pay all in their native language. Chinese shiitake spawn import to Japan hit record high in 2017
TOKYO, July. 8 ― Japan’s imports of shiitake spawn, which are essentially mushroom seeds, hit a record volume in 2017, official data have shown. Shiitake spawn imports to Japan rose 18% to 15,649 metric tons in 2017 from a year earlier, the finance ministry said. That was the 10th consecutive year of growth since 2008 and all imports were from China. The Edible Mushroom Spawn Association has estimated that shiitake grown from the imported mushroom spawn accounted for 7.5 percent of the Japanese total production volume in 2017. Abandoned world war factory sitting still in farmland
SAITAMA, Aug. 15 – The day to remember the end of the World War II came again on August 15. However, in a crop land in Kushibiki region, Fukaya city, Saitama Prefecture, a thick concrete building always sits still to help you recall the war. The 5-square-meter 10-meter-high 2-story building used to be a gunpowder factory built during the World War II. Both the building and the farmland belong to a local farmer, but he grows nothing there as the land is always shady because of the structure. During the war, it was, reportedly, part of the No.2 arsenal of the Tokyo army base. It was moved from Tokyo to … Continue reading
