【News】 Hot competition among “summer flowers” now kicks off toward 2020 Tokyo Olympic & Paralympic Games (Aug. 16, 2016)

World’s top level athletes have been playing exciting games and competitions at the 2016 Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

On the other hand, a hot competition is now intensifying at muggy Daiba in Minato-ku, Tokyo toward a “goal” of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. “Athletes” participating in this competition are flowers.

“Flower and Green Events Committee,” organized by related companies marketing flower seeds and flowers in Tokyo, has held a contest of growing flowers at an experimental garden located in Daiba so as to select ones that are resistant to hot weather at the summer season in Tokyo.

The Committee plans to make a proposal to related organizations of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games that summer flowers awarded with “gold medal” in the contest should be used to decorate halls, fields and other facilities of the 2020 Olympic games.

In the experimental garden, seed companies and producer’s organizations belonging to the Committee have been growing various kinds of flowers including “Petunia” and “Madagascar Periwinkle.”

Seven specialists representing horticulture and gardening institutes are selected to judge the “flower competition” by assessing with scores a shape of each variety of flower plant, its number of flowers, and colors of flowers.

Their assessment will take into consideration a growth rate of each flower from transplanting of the seedling as well as growing environments of the flower plants.

“Gold medalist flowers” will be finally selected on September 7 from among summer flowers grown in most heathy conditions at the hot and humidity summer season in Tokyo.
