【News】 Geographical indication law – a push for local brand promotion (June 19, 2014)
The geographical indication law aimed at promoting local agricultural and food brands was passed in the Diet on Wednesday, June 18, and is expected to take effect next fiscal year. Local agricultural communities welcome the introduction of the system which enables the government to give endorsement on high – quality farm products and food brands and keep control over counterfeits. In order to facilitate sales of value-added local specialties, it is necessary to make the system well – known among farmers and regional agricultural co-operatives. The Diet passed a bill to legislate geographical indications on Wednesday, June 18, aimed at promoting and protecting local agricultural brands. Agriculture minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said the ministry will take measures to encourage farmers and agricultural organizations to utilize the system. GI system certifies that a registered agricultural or food brand is produced in a particular region using a method unique to that area, thus linking its quality, reputation or other characteristics to its geographical origin. Tomokatsu Sowa Rice farmers of Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture, who had refrained from rice production after the nuclear meltdown in Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima No. 1 power plant, were allowed to resume rice farming this year in areas excluding the evacuation zone for the first time in four years.
