【News】 Geographical indication law – a push for local brand promotion (June 19, 2014)

  The geographical indication law aimed at promoting local agricultural and food brands was passed in the Diet on Wednesday, June 18, and is expected to take effect next fiscal year. Local agricultural communities welcome the introduction of the system which enables the government to give endorsement on high – quality farm products and food brands and keep control over counterfeits. In order to facilitate sales of value-added local specialties, it is necessary to make the system well – known among farmers and regional agricultural co-operatives. 【News】 Diet enacts geographical indication law (June 18, 2014)

  The Diet passed a bill to legislate geographical indications on Wednesday, June 18, aimed at promoting and protecting local agricultural brands. Agriculture minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said the ministry will take measures to encourage farmers and agricultural organizations to utilize the system. GI system certifies that a registered agricultural or food brand is produced in a particular region using a method unique to that area, thus linking its quality, reputation or other characteristics to its geographical origin. It sets a standard to assure quality of the products and avoid the use of brand names for products lacking the quality or those produced in other areas. Kotaro Yamada – Murasaki (purple) Project (Chikushino-shi, Fukuoka Prefecture) – Residents of Chikushino-shi, Fukuoka Prefecture, are trying to boost the development of the city by restoring old traditional coloring methods that uses lithospermum erythrorhizonor, which is called Murasaki-so (purple plant) in Japan. Murasaki-so, also called Murasaki in a shorter form, had been cultivated all around the city as a plant to make natural purple colorant. 【News】 Government panel proposes reforming agricultural co-operatives in five years (June 14, 2014)

  The Council for Regulatory Reform came up with its second proposal on Friday, June 13, calling for a drastic overhaul of the agricultural co-operative system in the coming five years. The recommendations, submitted to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, asked that related bills be submitted to the ordinary Diet session next year, but conclusions for many of the proposals, such as the controversial issue of how to reform the functions and powers of the Central Union of Agricultural Co-operatives (JA-Zenchu), are left for future discussions. 【News】 Slow progress in decontamination hinders rice farming in Minamisoma (June 12, 2014)

  Tomokatsu Sowa Rice farmers of Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture, who had refrained from rice production after the nuclear meltdown in Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima No. 1 power plant, were allowed to resume rice farming this year in areas excluding the evacuation zone for the first time in four years. However, many of them decided not to do so due to delay in the city’s decontamination works. The city’s projects to decontaminate farmlands and irrigation channels have not been implemented because of contractors’ labor shortage, and farmers fear they would not be able to resume rice planting next year as well.
