Japan A2 Milk Association introduces certification system to give new option to consumers needing milk with less post-dairy digestive discomfort

For the first time in Japan, the Japan A2 Milk Association will introduce a new certification system for A2 milk, which is said to be less likely to cause discomfort in the stomach, this spring. The group of dairy farmers and producers seeking to popularize this easier-on-digestion milk will establish a system to certify the processes from production to distribution to start selling the products with certification marks in March this year. The initiative will create a new option for milk and, hopefully, a new market in Japan.

On January 22, the association announced the establishment of the committee of A2 milk certification auditors as an auditing body to ensure quality control standards. The association plans to start the trial run of the certification system in February and the official implementation in early March.

The certification system will ensure the quality control of A2 milk entirely from production to distribution, including tests of dairy cow genetics, raw milk, and milk. A certification mark is given to the products that meet specific standards. So far, the stable distribution of A2 milk has been hampered by the lack of quality control standards and domestic inspection systems. The association intends to solve the problems to accelerate its spread.

A2 milk is gaining attention as milk for people experiencing discomfort drinking ordinary cows’ milk, and the market is expanding. The association has more than 50 members, the majority of whom are dairy farmers. “Japan’s dairy industry has been facing tough challenges, but we want to revitalize it by establishing the foundation for safe and secure products and making A2 Milk a solid brand,” the association said.
