TOKYO, Sept. 20 ― Heads of the East Asian Agricultural Organization Council (EAOC) have agreed to dismantle the group and integrate it to the Asian Farmers’ Group of Cooperation (AFGC), which represents agricultural organizations of more Asian countries. The EAOC, comprised of farmers from Japan, India, South Korea, Mongolia and Taiwan, held its last high-level meeting on Sept. 18-19 in Tokyo. The meeting was organized by the Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA-ZENCHU). TOKYO, Sept. 16 ― With Halloween looming, a Japanese farmers’ co-operative in Wakayama prefecture has held a promotional event in Tokyo to encourage visitors to eat local kaki. Halloween is marked on Oct. 31 every year, on the eve of the Christian feast of All Saints’ Day. Various Christian traditions developed around the holiday, such as lighting candles and offering prayers to the dead, which are still observed by many people today. And JA Wakayama has capitalized the Christian holiday since 2014, as its locally-grown kaki resembles a pumpkin’s shape and color. TOKYO, Sept. 9 ― As more Japanese people have appreciated for the benefits of a rural life, Japan’s largest farmers’ group will start offering a unique service next year, providing them with access to farms seldom visited by single travelers. Nokyo Tourist Corp., an arm of the Japan agricultural cooperatives, or JA group, will arrange farming experiences for employers who plan corporate training or fringe benefits for their employees. OKINAWA, Aug. 25 －Sales of Wagyu beef by an agricultural corporative in Okinawa (JA Okinawa) for Hong Kong cruise ships are doing well. JA Okinawa began offering the beef for the cruise service provider based in Hong Kong in April this year, and in the first three months, it sold more than 10 million yen. Guests on the boat need to pay extra to select premium dining options that include the beef from Okinawa. TOKYO, Aug. 12 ― Athletes who finished in the top three received Japanese flower bouquets at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships held in Tokyo on Aug. 9-14. This is a part of efforts that the Japan Flower Growers Association (JFGA) has been pushing. The organization aims to bring the floral tradition back at the world’s biggest sport event: the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in 2020.
