More than 80 percent of heads of primary agricultural co-operatives nationwide said aging of farmers is a threat to sustainable regional agriculture, The Japan Agricultural News survey showed. The survey was conducted in November on heads of 679 primary JAs nationwide, and 523 responded. Asked to give issues of concern for regional agriculture, 83 percent, the largest percentage, chose aging and lack of successors, followed by 51 percent who said they worry about dwindling prices of farm products, 47 percent who are threatened by progress in trade liberalization moves such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement and 39 percent who are concerned over reduced farm support policies. 90 percent of heads of primary agricultural co-operatives (JAs) do not give high marks to the agricultural policies of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s administration, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade agreement and revision of the Agricultural Co-operatives Society Law, The Japan Agricultural News survey showed. The survey was conducted in November on heads of the 679 primary JAs nationwide, and 523 responded. More than 90 percent of them said the government failed to follow the Diet resolutions which pledge to protect key farm products in the TPP agreement, and that the law revision would adversely affect management of farm co-ops. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday, Dec. 25, asked Choe Okuno, president of the Central Union of Agricultural Co-operatives (JA-Zenchu) to cooperate in strengthening competitiveness of the farm sector and increasing farmers’ income. In a meeting held at the prime minister’s office for the first time since August, Abe and Okuno also agreed on the need to nurture ambitious farmers. Concerns are growing over the impact of market liberalization on dairy farmers. Many fear that cuts and abolishment of tariffs on cheese under the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement could severely hamper development of domestic cheese production, which has been a major pillar of the nation’s dairy policy. Now is the time for the government and the private sector to work together to review the policy to cope with expected challenges. The Japanese government will boost exports of Japanese sake, as some member countries of the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks agreed to remove tariffs on sake, while the United States, the largest importer of sake, plans to allow the use of the name “Japanese sake” only to those brewed in Japan. Although sake exports are increasing every year, its share in the global market remains small. The government hopes to expand sales of sake through conducting promotional campaigns at home and abroad, as well as utilizing the geographical indication system to protect domestic brands.
