One of the members of the Tokyo group of Noh no Ikebana invited me to join the activity. I’m thoroughly moved by the way they appreciate the uniqueness of each piece of vegetables, even those in irregular sizes and shapes, and use all of them effectively as part of their arrangements. “I began Noh no Ikebana six year ago after reading articles in Japan Agricultural News. I live close to a lot of mountains and fields which are the source of an unlimited number of materials, and I found it very interesting that I can make arrangements using natural materials in natural ways. I do traditional ikebana since I was a junior high school student, but I think Noh no Ikebana is very special in how we can use the materials in any forms ranging from buds to dry pieces to create brisk displays. “Usually, I have a large basket in the entrance hall and enjoy arrangements with silver glasses, persimmon branches and other mountain flowers and fruits. I also like crafting and sometimes enjoy making akebia vine wreaths. Most of the people here enjoy the arrangement in the same way, I think. I met Noh no Ikebana 12 years ago at one of the gatherings of female farmers in Hino city, Tokyo. The group, Michikusa-kai, invited a lecturer from a Noh no Ikebana club in Tokyo and I was so thrilled to know ordinary items like vegetables and flowers can be combined to make such an artistic presentation. It was also very happy to see my vegetables looking so beautiful in the arrangement. I currently work with 15 other members of a local Noh no Ikebana club, and exhibit arrangements at local events such as annual symposiums on urban farming held by Hino city.
