【News】 Shinzo Abe raises expectations for farmers’ income growth at joint meeting of administration and private sectors (March 5, 2016)

Choe Okuno, president of JA-ZENCHU, a representative body of Japanese agricultural cooperative (JA) organizations, said the JA group will make every effort to successfully carry out its self-reform scheme at a joint meeting of governmental top officials and representatives of private sectors, which was held on March 4 at the Prime Minister’s Office, in Nagata-cho, Tokyo. Implementation of measures to increase farm incomes of producers, such as profitable marketing of agricultural products and price reductions of farm inputs, will be a key point of the self-reform scheme, Choe Okuno stressed. 【News】 ZEN-NOH to boost farm exports more than 12 billion yen by 2018 mainly from its new Singapore base (March 3, 2016)

ZEN-NOH (National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations), a business organization of agricultural cooperatives (JA) in Japan, decided to establish a model overseas base in Singapore and build up an effective system for marketing Japanese farm products from the base by 2018. In a next three-three plan beginning from April 2016, ZEN-NOH will promote exports of farm products shipped from Japan via its overseas base by improving processing facilities in Singapore as well as by expanding a network of distribution channels for Japanese products in the Asian region during the next three years. 【News】 Members of Female Farmer Project demonstrate their achievements during past three years (Feb. 28, 2016)

Members of Female Farmer Project celebrated its third anniversary at a gathering held on Feb. 27 at Tokyo to exchange views on achievements of their activities during past three years. The Project, a nationwide network of young female farmers, has now increased their members up to 400 females by ten times since it was organized under the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 2013. It has also 25 support members of agricultural companies. The members participated in the Tokyo gathering, sponsored by NHK Educational Corporation, to share reports on their activities including collaborations with the support members of farm-related companies. 【News】 Young females fill Hotel buffets serving both strawberry sweets and fresh strawberries (Feb. 28, 2016)

“Strawberry Buffets” at luxury hotels in the Tokyo metropolitan area are now enhancing its reputation among young female guests. Those buffets are almost fully booked everyday by those guests visiting the buffets to have various kinds of strawberries as much as they can eat for a fixed price. Minoru Kamata, doctor and writer A farm in northern Iraq, located at 30 minutes drive away from the city of Erbil, is growing big broccolis in a greenhouse. For about two years, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has been offering technical assistance to the farm during the fall and winter fallow periods to grow broccolis. In the beginning of this year, I visited the farm to get broccolis to give to refugees whom I would meet when I give a lecture at a refugee camp.
