【News】 Japan’s fiscal 2017 budget draft on agriculture gives highest priority to enhancement of its international competitiveness (Dec. 23, 2016)
cv The fiscal 2017 budget draft was approved by the Cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on December 22. Agriculture, forestry and fisheries-related budgets for fiscal 2017 totaled 2.3071 trillion yen, 2.0 billion yen less than those allocated for fiscal 2016. The budget allocation for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) was given a top priority to measures for enhancing agriculture’s international competitiveness. MAFF will increase its budget spending in fiscal 2017 on agricultural and rural consolidation projects aiming at farm land improvement particularly by expanding paddy field plots in the country. A bath with Banpeiyu pomelos was shown to the media on Dec. 6 at Hinagu hot springs in Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture, before it was opened to the public on Dec. 10. Local residents were invited by the Hinagu association of inns to enjoy the fresh fragrance in the hot water. Banpeiyu pomelos, the local specialty of the city, are one of the world’s largest citrus fruits with an average size of around 20 cm in diameter. The member hotels and inns of the association have organized Banpeiyu baths every winter since 2000. 【News】 Iwate University to develop system of cleaning up bovine leukemia infected zone for cattle breeding farmers (Dec. 22, 2016)
A study group organized by Iwate University has launched a project to develop a new system for purifying a bovine leukemia infected zone by quarantining black-haired Wagyu (Japanese beef cattle) with a higher incidence risk at a special stock farm for the purpose of preventing a spread of infection among cattle herds in the zone. 【News】 MAFF & JETRO to promote sales of instant rice packs in Chinese markets (Dec. 21, 2016)
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) jointly plan to strengthen sales promotion activities of cooked rice packs for Chinese consumers. The sales promotion will be carried out by distributing the rice packs to Chinese tourists as well as using instant rice packs at cooking classes for Chinese consumers in order to increase public recognition of the commodity among Chinese people. 【News】 Japan-EU EPA negotiators put off year-end broad agreement until early next year (Dec. 18, 2016)
Japan and the European Union (EU) gave up seeking a broad agreement on a bilateral Economic Partnership Agreement or EPA. At a press conference held in Tokyo on December 17, EU chief negotiator Mauro Petriccione said that there remains distance on some issues in farm and automobile free trade deals, which need to be bridged between EU and Japan.
