Japan’s apple growers worry about increasing cheap imports

TOKYO, Sept. 20 ― Aomori is Japan’s top producing region of apples but increasing cheap imports from foreign countries during the summer months worry the region’s growers. In May-August 2017, Japan imported 3,648 metric tons of apples mainly from New Zealand, data from the finance ministry showed. The figure was the highest level since 2000. The import in the same period of 2018 is now expected to exceed the 2017 figure. Apple imports in summer have rapidly increased since 2012 when the bad weather that year led to a decline in production. Asian farmers integrate into Asian Farmers’ Group Coperation

TOKYO, Sept. 20 ― Heads of the East Asian Agricultural Organization Council (EAOC) have agreed to dismantle the group and integrate it to the Asian Farmers’ Group of Cooperation (AFGC), which represents agricultural organizations of more Asian countries. The EAOC, comprised of farmers from Japan, India, South Korea, Mongolia and Taiwan, held its last high-level meeting on Sept. 18-19 in Tokyo. The meeting was organized by the Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA-ZENCHU). The JA-ZENCHU also provides the permanent secretariat of the AFGC, consisted of farmers’ group of 10 countries: Japan, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, The Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. Wakayama farmers promote locally-grown kaki on Halloween

TOKYO, Sept. 16 ― With Halloween looming, a Japanese farmers’ co-operative in Wakayama prefecture has held a promotional event in Tokyo to encourage visitors to eat local kaki. Halloween is marked on Oct. 31 every year, on the eve of the Christian feast of All Saints’ Day. Various Christian traditions developed around the holiday, such as lighting candles and offering prayers to the dead, which are still observed by many people today. And JA Wakayama has capitalized the Christian holiday since 2014, as its locally-grown kaki resembles a pumpkin’s shape and color. New minister seeks cooperation on farm reform with JA group

TOKYO, Oct. 4 ― Japan’s new agriculture minister, Takamori Yoshikawa, has said that he wants to work the sector’s reform with the country’s largest farmers’ group, or JA group. “The core of the farm reform is to boost farmers’ income and support young people to run farms with a focus on production,” Yoshikawa told the Japanese press in an interview on Oct. 3, one day after he was appointed by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
