TOKYO, Sep. 26 – A Tokyo-based leather goods manufacturer and seller has released a line of items made of leather looking exactly like the skin of Shizuoka crown melon.
The company, Earl’s Favorite, has succeeded in delicately recreating the beautiful webbing seen on the surface of the king of fruits in Japan by embossing the pattern on domestically-tanned cow leather. Currently, it sells wallets, smartphone cases and several other items made of the melon-skin leather with excellent texture.
Even the color inside its products is chosen very carefully – juicy pale yellow-green, which is the color of the flesh of Shizuoka crown melons.
To recreate the perfect texture and the patterns, a representative of Earl’s Favorite, Yoshihisa Osawa, 44, ordered a resin sample of the highest standard muskmelon from a muskmelon producers cooperative association in Shizuoka Prefecture – the same sample which is used by Shizuoka melon farmers for checking shapes and net on the skin. “Our goal was reproducing even, flawless netting that meets the strict standards set by the real crown melon producers,” he said.
And then, the goal was met, and the melon-like leather items have already won the admiration of the growers of the most expensive fruits in Japan. The company is now receiving inquiries from some growers, asking if they can use the leather goods in their promotional activities.
The least expensive item in the line is sold at 3,800 yen.
