【News】Chisen-Botan: Breath-taking flower carpet in Matsue-shi, Shimane Prefecture (May 8, 2016)

In late April, the pond is filled with over 30,000 blossoms of peonies. The attraction is called Sanmanrin-no-Chisen-Botan, meaning ponds with 30,000 peony blossoms in Japanese, and held in Yuushien Japanese garden on the Daikon Island in Matsue-shi, Shimane Prefecture. The island is the largest producer of young peonies and these flowers are gathered from local peony farmers, 30 of them in total this year. The breath-taking scene first appeared four years ago as the highlight of the garden’s spring peony festival and with the aim of bringing more people to the island. 【News】 Double loan debts to hinder farmers from revitalization of dairy farming in JA Kikuchi area marking one month since the Kumamoto earthquake (May 14, 2016)

Kumamoto and its neighboring prefectures marked one month on April 14 since the first of two massive earthquakes struck the region. People in the agricultural sector are growing their concerns that some of the quake-hit farmers will face a serious problem of “double loan debts” when they challenge to rehabilitate their farm management by getting a new loan without paying off an existing debt. The three-day general assembly of World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), held under the overall theme of “Partnership for Growth” in Livingstone, Zambia, successfully completed its program on May 6. At the closing of the Rome-based WFO’s general assembly, participants of more than 600 representatives of farmers’ organizations throughout the world agreed it is especially necessary for farmers’ organizations to strengthen their bargaining power with governmental authorities and related corporations through encouraging farmers to form their organization. 【News】 Two female farm leaders agree to enhance further women’s active involvement at world farmers’ conference in Zambia (May 7, 2016)

Harumi Suzuki, president of National Council of Agricultural Cooperative Women’s Associations, had a meeting with Evelyn Nguleka, the first female president of World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO) headquartered at Rome, Italy, at Livingstone, Zambia on May 5, where the WFO’s General Assembly was held during three days since May 4. At the meeting, WFO’s president Nguleka touched upon women’s participation in farmers’ organization, and emphasized the importance of their ability to advocate their views to the outside of the organization. Farming nurtures people. The main character of “Silver Spoon,” a popular manga on students of an agricultural high school, is not an exception. Being brought up as a son of a company employee, the main character experiences farming for the first time in his life after entering the high school and struggles to grow up. Hokkaido Obihiro Agricultural High School, which the manga is based on, will be introduced in a high school English textbook. The textbook will include descriptions of students at the school, such as learning the preciousness of life through births and deaths of livestock animals.
