【News】Bright red, orange and yellow safflowers in morning haze (July 7, 2016) The busiest season for safflower farmers has begun in Takase area,Yamagata-shi. Yamagata Prefecture. The farmers pick the flowers in early morning when the thorns surrounding the flowers and the leaves are softened by the morning dew. This way, they don’t get the thorns in their fingers. The flowers are used to produce dye, and the picking season goes through until mid-July. There are safflower fields of approximately 4 hectares in total in Yamagata-shi, according to Agricultural Cooperative (JA) Yamagata.

Drinking cow’s milk during pregnancy can reduce or prevent symptoms of postpartum depression, according to the study report released on June 16, 2016, by Ehime University. This new function of the milk was revealed for the first time in the world, according to the university, and may come under spotlight as an additional value of milk which has high nutritious value. Hida Agricultural Cooperative (JA) based at Hida-shi, Gifu prefecture, plans to operate a micro hydroelectric power station, so-called micro hydro, jointly with a company named “Sugo-Mirai (future) Development” which was set up by all the residents of 61 families living at a rural community of “Sugo” in Hida city. A new-type coffee specially blended with brown rice produced in Japan was just debuted this July by ZEN-NOH (National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations), JA’s (agricultural cooperative’s) national business organization, headquartered at Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. ZEN-NOH developed a manufacturing technology of processing an equal amount of roasted coffee beans and brown rice into “brown rice coffee” for brewing at home, which successfully makes good use of the flavor and sweetness of rice. “Brown rice coffee” is expected to appeal its originality in the domestic market of coffee and also make a contribution to an increase in rice consumption in the country.
