The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) made an announcement on September 30 that it will be possible for travelers visiting Singapore, including inbound tourists returning to the country, to carry fresh hen eggs produced in Japan with them as their souvenirs from October 1.
Commercial exports of the Japanese eggs for sales to Singapore have already been allowed. And it is now approved to bring those eggs for personal consumption from Japan to Singapore, if they are labelled with a carry-on certificate issued by MAFF’s Animal Quarantine Service.
The animal quarantine offices of Japan and Singapore have allowed international tourists to bring Japanese beef into Singapore as a hand luggage for personal consumption.
“Beef Sukiyaki hot pot is one of the most popular Japanese meals in Singapore. We hope her consumers will enjoy tasting genuine Sukiyaki with Japanese hen eggs,” MAFF’s official appeals.
According to MAFF, only six tons of Japanese hen eggs are commercially exported to Singapore in a year. Among Singaporean consumers, Japanese eggs are popular mostly because they can eat raw eggs produced in Japan.
With a view to stimulating new demand for Japanese fresh eggs in Singapore, governments of the two countries have been talking over a system allowing tourists to easily bring the eggs into Singapore as their souvenirs.
The quarantine conditions required for tourists are (i) Japanese hen eggs commercially sold for personal consumption in Japan, (ii) eggs derived from Japanese hen, and (iii) maximum 30 eggs per person.
