【News】 Spending habits by Chinese tourists shift from shopping to dining in Japan, Gurunavi says (Sep. 30, 2016)

Gurunavi, Inc., operating an online restaurant search site called Japan Restaurant Guide at Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, has conducted a survey on spending habits of international tourists visiting Japan. The survey was responded by 422 Gurunavi member restaurants across the country.

According to results of the survey, more than 80 percent of those restaurants received guests from overseas during past twelve months. Most of the restaurants, particularly Yakinikuya Japanese BBQ restaurants, have a strong tendency to increase foreign guests.

Spending habits of Chinese tourists have been shifting from shopping of goods made in Japan to dining of Japanese cuisine. It is expected that Chinese tourists will increasingly visit Japanese restaurants in October when they have a Chinese National Day holiday season.

Eighty-three percent of surveyed restaurants received guests of international tourists during past twelve months. Most popular among those tourists were so-called “dining bars” serving drinks as well, 91 percent of which foreign tourists visited, followed by 90 percent of Japanese food restaurants and 88 percent of Chinese cuisine restaurants.

An average spending per overseas tourist was 1,645 yen for lunch and 4,162 yen for dinner. The spending at the Japanese food restaurants was averagely 2,500 yen for lunch and 5,833 yen for dinner.
