【News】 New food labeling law is passed to consolidate Japan’s food labeling regulations (June 22, 2013)

  The Upper House passed a new food labeling bill on Friday, June 21, to unify overlapping regulations on the safety and quality of food products in Japan and make food labeling easier to understand. Although the new law will not substantially change the scope of food labeling requirements, it will provide stricter administrative orders and sanctions for violating the law. The new labeling rules are expected to be introduced in April 2015 at the earliest. 【News】 The first longicorn beetle in Japan confirmed in Aichi, damaging cherry and Japanese apricot trees (June 21, 2013)

The Aichi Agricultural Research Center reported by Thursday, June 20, that it confirmed inhabitation of Aromia bungii, a species of longicorn beetle which gives damage to cherry and ume (Japanese apricot) trees, in Ama district in the western part of Aichi Prefecture for the first time in Japan. The center is calling for catching and killing of the beetles if found, since no pesticide labels are approved to exterminate them. 【News】 LDP’s campaign platform for the July election stresses doubling agricultural income (June 21, 2013)

  The ruling Liberal Democratic Party unveiled on Thursday, June 20, a campaign platform for the Upper House election expected in July, putting forth its 10-year strategy to double farmers’ incomes, with ambitious goals of doubling the number of beginning farmers and facilitating farmland consolidation so that within 10 years, 80% of agricultural land will be cultivated by locally certified farmers who serve as the backbone of farming communities. Currently, such farmers manage only 49% of farmlands, and the rest is operated by small-scale farmers, many of them aging and retiring, leading to an increase in abandoned farmlands. 【News】 A Vietnamese delegation visits Aichi to learn about the Japanese agricultural industry and cooperative business (June 20, 2013)

A delegation from the Vietnam Co-operative Alliance’s Institute of Co-operative Economy Development visited agricultural facilities in Aichi Prefecture on Wednesday, June 19, to conduct field studies on the production and distribution of agricultural products, as well as learning about businesses of agricultural cooperatives in Japan. The delegation, invited by Aichi Chita Agricultural Cooperative (JA Aichi Chita), visited a JA group company which grows seedlings of flowers and vegetables, a sorting facility for greenhouse-grown mandarin oranges, a farmers’ store, a welfare facility and a processing facility for agricultural products. 【News】 TPP negotiations proceed without Japan’s participation – series of inter-sessional meetings on specific areas are scheduled this month (June 20, 2013)
