  Daisuke Matsumoto Beef imports in Japan are showing stable increase after the Japanese government eased import restrictions on American beef in February, but beef importers are controlling shipments in June in order to avoid the government from taking safeguard measures in August. Many predict, however, that the imports are likely to increase again in July, leading to intensifying competition between imported beef and domestic beef in the Japanese market. The Finance Ministry reported on Thursday, June 27, that beef imports in May increased 32% from a year before to 55,557 tons, with frozen beef imports rising 42% to 32,951 tons and chilled beef imports up 19% to 22,607 tons. … Continue reading

OFUNATO, Iwate Prefecture – Fans of Kesen-cha, grown in Kesen district in Iwate Prefecture hit by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, are striving to restore its production by providing seedlings and decontaminating tea plantations irradiated by the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant accident. Takuo Fukumoto A hotel in Wakasa, Fukui Prefecture, is known for offering baths filled with extract of ume (Japanese apricots). Guests at Kojokan Pamco, a hotel facing the Mikata five lakes near the Sea of Japan, soak in the bathwater and enjoy the fresh scent of ume. The ume bath is made by circulating hot water between the bathtub and a glass tank filled with 500 kilograms of ume fruits, so that ume extract in the water flows into the bathtub and produces the refreshing scent.
