Kotaro Yamada – Ryukyu bingata dyed textile (Okinawa Prefecture) – Bingata is a traditional Okinawan dyeing technique with a history of nearly 700 years. Local artisans draw pictures in vivid warm colors mainly on silk or cotton textiles, often using stencil papers with patterns cut out by hand. The tradition came out of the fateful crisis of war damages during the World War ll and is inherited by the local people with handcrafting skills. Bingata uses mineral and botanical pigments to dye textiles in distinctive colors. Kotaro Yamada – Naguri Canoe Studio (Hanno-shi, Saitama Prefecture) – Hanno-shi, Saitama Prefecture, is only about one hour ride on a train from the heart of Tokyo, but three-fourth of the city is forest land. The city had flourished with the forestry and the wood processing industry until 1964, when the Japanese government fully liberalized wood import to Japan. Today, some people are gathering at Naguri Canoe Studio, a non-profit organization (NPO) established by local residents, to bring back the prosperity by promoting canoes made out of locally-grown timber. Kotaro Yamada Lamps made out of home-grown gourds by a 41-year-old record shop owner are now popular in Itoshima-shi, Fukuoka Prefecture. The organic lamps cast a warm glow on everything in the room and they are used to decorate a wedding reception venue, for example. The record shop owner, Osamu Tatsuishi, harvests the gourds in summer and soaks them in water for a while to let the seeds inside go rotten.
