【Opinion】How to stop the TPP : Let`s fight together with consumer (Oct. 17,2016)

[By James R. Simpson, Affiliate Professor and Senior Fellow Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service Washington State University] It is understandable that interest in fighting TPP has diminished now that the Abe administration has reorganized—essentially decimated—Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA-ZENCHU) as part of national restructuring. But, I argue, there are ways for Japanese farmers to win the battle over TPP. One essence of my argument is that internationally farmers’ organizations have been able to uphold the principle that every country has a right to protect and support production of food for its own consumption. Consider that the WTO round of Doha trade negotiations is stalled … Continue reading

【News】 SBS imported rice transacted because of its “cheaper” price: Trading houses reply to interview-based survey by Japan Agri. News (Oct. 24, 2016)

The Japan Agricultural News implemented an interview-based survey on transactions of rice imported under “simultaneous buy and sell” (SBS) system, and revealed that all of trading houses, responding to the survey, took part in the so-called SBS rice business because “imported rice is cheaper than domestically-produced rice.” The survey was carried out from October 13 to 21 for all of the 24 trading firms with qualifications for bidding under the SBS system, out of which 11 firms responded. With regard to prices of transacted SBS rice, most common response was “SBS imported rice costs 20 percent less than domestic rice.” On October 7, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries … Continue reading

【Opinion】Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement emerging as focus of U.S. presidential election (Sep. 20, 2016)

[By Masaru Yamada, The Japan Agricultural News Special Senior Writer] Television programs are showing Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton all day long. Major newspapers are busy reporting about them. Staying in the United States for the past two weeks, I can feel that the momentum is growing towards the presidential election, with the election day coming in November. What surprised me was the fact that the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal has become one of the major issues in the election campaign. Until about two years ago, the only place one could hear the word “TPP” was in parts of Washington, D.C. I’m sure 99 percent of Americans did not know … Continue reading

【News】 Special Committee begins deliberation whether to ratify TPP free trade pact: Ruling and opposite parties spar over deliberation time taking Diet dissolution into consideration (Oct.15, 2016)

The special committee of the House of Representatives began deliberation whether to ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade pact and pass its related bills under the chairmanship of Ryu Shionoya on October 14. The administration and ruling parties are eager for approval of the TPP agreement, since Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pledged that the TPP pact should be ratified at the current session of the Diet. On the other hand, opposite parties are poised to become more aggressive against the Shinzo Abe’s administration by carrying out thorough investigations not only into TPP pact’s consistency with the Diet’s resolution regarding the TPP trade negotiations, but also into dubious transactions … Continue reading

【Opinion】All-out competition leads to devastation of agriculture (Sep. 26, 2016)

[By Masaru Kaneko, Professor of Keio University] Two major United States presidential election candidates – Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton – are both against the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. How meaningful is it for Japan to rush to ratify the agreement, when the U.S. is not in a situation to pass it? If Clinton becomes the president, the U.S. could make even harsher requests. The biggest points at issue are the stock breeding and dairy farming sectors. As for stock breeding, 70 percent of tariffs on beef and pork will be eliminated under the pact. If some dairy products including cheese will be subject to market liberalization, there are … Continue reading
