【Opinion】 Behind the ¥80 canned tomatoes (Feb. 16, 2016)

Senior special writer, Masaru Yamada The other day, I saw extremely cheap Italy-made cans of tomatoes sold at a supermarket in my neighborhood. The 400 gram cans were priced around ¥80 each. Yutaka Une, farmer and philosopher Before we knew it, we have begun to think that it is always better to manufacture something with lower costs and shorter working hours if quality is not affected. But I believe such way of thinking is abnormal when it comes to agriculture. If farmers become obsessed with such an idea, it would become a norm for them to try to remain competitive at home and abroad only in terms of economic value. However, it is not only farmers that are engaged in farming. For example, rice is created by the coordination among the sun, the rain, water, soil, other creatures, wind (atmosphere), waterways, ridges … Continue reading

Kentrou Tominaga Growing a big red tomato in a bottle. That’s what this 72-year-old gentleman in Omihachiman-shi, Shiga Prefecture, does it as a hobby. Hitoshi Watanabe, who is actually a vegetable farmer, uses clear empty whiskey bottles of approximately 25 centimeters tall. He puts one young tomato in a bottle when it’s small enough to fit in the 3-centimeter mouth of the bottle, carefully not to drop the tomato off the branch.
