【Opinion】 Robots may take over labor, but not our pride for farming (July 18, 2016)

By Yutaka Une, farmer and philosopher The development of artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing rapidly along a range of fronts, including igo and shogi software. Let us imagine what would happen if farming machines are equipped with the technology. An unmanned tractor programmed with the latest AI suddenly stops before going into a rice field. It judged the rice field is too small and is not worth cultivating in terms of efficiency. AI can’t understand that rural villages would be deteriorated unless farmlands – even those under unfavorable conditions – are cultivated. Love for the home region should be programmed into the robot in order to solve the problem. Then, … Continue reading

【Editor’s column】 Mourn for Ei, Lyricist of Sukiyaki Song (July 12, 2016)

It was a pleasant surprise during a visit in Tanzania. I was gathering news in the far-away distant land and saw a band playing the famous Japanese song, Ue o Muite Aruko (Look at the Sky) at a local restaurant. It touched my heart deep inside. Receiving the sad news of the passing away of Japanese lyricist Rokusuke Ei on July 7, 2016, I’m recalling profound lyrics and messages he left with us. His iconic works include the Sukiyaki song, Toku e Ikitai (I want to go somewhere so far away alone) and Kuroi Hanabira (Black flower petals). Ei was not just a famous lyricist but one of the pioneering … Continue reading

【Editor’s column】Let’s give Prime Minister Shinzo Abe a time of Zen (July 13, 2016)

Wuzu Fayan, a Chinese Zen master of the Song dynasty known as Goso Hoen in Japanese, left a saying admonishing those who monopolize power. He said people in power tend to behave arrogantly, but it is when you have power that you should listen to others. He warned that misfortunes will come to those who steamroller the opposition. Great leaders are great listeners, he said. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s supremacy was cemented further by the Liberal Democratic Party’s victory in the Upper House election. Abe also managed to fulfill his long-cherished wish of political forces in favor of revising the Constitution securing a two-thirds majority in the chamber. He is … Continue reading

【Opinion】A ghost haunting the agriculture ministry – return of secret agreement for rice imports (July 5, 2016)

[By Masaru Yamada, The Japan Agricultural News Senior Special Writer] The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Tokyo’s Kasumigaseki district is haunted. Normally you can’t see the ghost, but it is witnessed once in a while. Recently, it showed itself amid a confusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade negotiations. The Japanese government imports 767,000 tons of rice every year under the minimum access scheme agreed upon in the negotiations for the Uruguay Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade concluded in the end of 1993. The Japanese and United States governments were engaged in fierce under-the-table negotiations at that time on the degree of Japan’s rice market … Continue reading

【Editor’s column】People’s voices can turn the tide (June 23, 2016)

[By Kazushiro Tamiya, Editor in Chief of The Japan Agricultural News] While the Lower House election is an election to decide who should be in power, the Upper House election is more of a confidence vote in the administration. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s administration is highly likely to be maintained, but the election will decide whether the forces backing Abe will increase or decrease. In another words, the election will make clear whether Abe’s administration will step on the accelerator or the brakes. The past three and a half years saw a historical turning point in terms of agricultural policies, as the Japanese government joined the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks … Continue reading
