A very special lunch box went on sale just recently in Ina-shi, Nagano Prefecture. It’s a boxed lunch called “Inadani Meibutsu Chinmi Bento (meaning a lunch box full of local rare delicacies of Inadani region)” and it contained various rare ingredients including wild boar meat, bee larvae, locusts, silk worm pupae, and young water bugs. The very exclusive bento boxes were sold on April 10, 2016, at the Cherry Blossom Festival held at Ina Park. Only 100 boxes were prepared and sold at 1500 yen each. 【News】 MAFF survey: Most of female farmers’ businesses involved in food processing (April 5, 2016)
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) recently released a report on females’ launching of new farm businesses at rural societies. MAFF has surveyed those activities in the country every two years since 2009. According to the MAFF’s latest report, a number of agricultural businesses started by women farmers totals 9580 as of March 31, 2015, 139 less than the previous survey conducted in fiscal 2012. A main factor for the decrease is retirements of aged females. 74 percent of the total businesses operated by female farmers in the country are involved in food processing, followed by distribution and marketing of farm products (70 percent) and agricultural production (25 … Continue reading

Tokushima Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Technology Support Center, based at Ishii-cho, Tokushima prefecture, has confirmed that a frame of metal bars called “grating” effectively prevents wild boars from entering farmlands. The grating is a framework of crossed metal bars mainly used for covering gutters and drains. Once wild boars pass on the grating, they will keep away from the metal framework so as to avoid having their hooves caught in spaces of grating’s bars. The approval rating for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Cabinet was 33 percent, while the disapproval rating further rose to 64 percent, according to the poll conducted in March by the Japan Agricultural News for its subscribers, mostly farmers, registered as agricultural policy monitors throughout the country.
