【News】 Japan’ s Export of Agricultural, Forest and Fishery products in the First Half-year of 2014 Increased by 10 Percent Due to Rice and Beef (Aug. 13, 2014)

According to the statistics announced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), the export of agricultural, forest and fishery products and food in the first half-year (from January to June) of 2014 amounted to JPY 284 billion, which increased by 10 percent compared to the record-high trade value of the last year’s same period. The growth of beef and rice trade was significant. The Japanese government has set a goal to increase the trade amount to JPY 1 trillion by 2020. 【News】 Japan agricultural co-operative head tells panel to compile farmer-friendly self-reform plan (Aug. 9, 2014)

  Akira Banzai, president of the Central Union of Agricultural Co-operatives (JA-Zenchu), asked an advisory council on Friday, Aug. 8, to discuss self-reform of the JA group in response to the government’s plan to restructure the group, taking farmers’ standpoint into consideration. The council should “listen to the voices of co-operative members who engage in farming and (present measures to) cope with future changes as a JA group so that the group can play a significant role (in increasing farmers’ income),” Banzai told council members, according to JA-Zenchu officials. Kotaro Yamada On August 8, 2014, National Veterinary Assay Laboratory (NVAL), Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan, had its open day for school children and offered the children opportunities to learn the work of animal doctors at the laboratory in Kokubunji-shi, Tokyo. The lab invited 20 local elementary and junior high school students and they thoroughly enjoyed being “small animal doctors” in white coats. Their first learning materials were small animals. Small doctors were asked to check the heart sounds of guinea pigs and chicks with stethoscopes. “Their hearts are beating so quickly!” they reported excitedly. 【News】 Rice dealers predict price decline after fall (Aug. 8, 2014)

Concerns among rice dealers are growing over possible price declines after the harvest season, with some of them saying that rice wholesalers will not be able to survive unless measures to boost rice consumption are taken. According to a survey by the Rice Stable Supply Support Organization released Thursday, Aug. 7, more rice traders think the supply-demand balance for rice will loosen in the coming three months, as the harvesting season nears. The diffusion index for rice prices and supply-demand balance for August, September and October marked 23, the lowest since the organization began compiling the data in March 2012. 【News】 JA Group introduces Japanese food culture in EXPO Milano, calling for respect for food variety (Aug. 8, 2014)

  The groups to participate in the Japan Pavilion for the international exposition in Milano (EXPO Milano) to be held in Italy, 2015, were officially announced on August 7.  33 local governments and 12 organizations including the Japan Agricultural Co-operatives (JA) group will attend as a team “All Japan” and introduce various cultures of food and farming.  The number of local governments participating in this EXPO is the highest ever.
