Japan to relax sale of unrefrigerated biologically clean tofu in July

TOKYO, June 28 – The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare of Japan is going to lift the ban on the sale of tofu at room temperature partially in mid-July at the earliest, according to a report released on June 27, 2018. At present, tofu sellers in Japan are required to sell only refrigerated tofu, but the ministry is to permit the sale of unrefrigerated one only if it’s packed in an aseptic container. Osaka earthquake shakes farm businesses in western Japan

IBARAKI, June 20 — One day after a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Osaka, Japan’s second largest metropolitan area, the vulnerability of many elements of urban infrastructure has been exposed. Four people died and more than 400 others were injured after the earthquake. The Osaka earthquake hit during the morning rush hour and affected many businesses, including farming operations. The agriculture ministry and the farmers’ co-operative JA group rushed to assist and assess quake damages. The meteorological agency warned additional earthquakes in the form of aftershocks of the magnitude 6.1 earthquake.

Japan’s food exports rise in April on beef and fishery products

TOKYO, June 12 — Japan’s food exports rose 20% in April from a year earlier on strong demand for wagyu beef and fishery products, the government said. Shipments of products such as agri-food, meat and seafood totaled 77.6 billion yen in April, 12.8 billion yen higher in the same month a year earlier, according to data from the agriculture ministry. Wagyu beef exports soared 30% to 1.9 billion yen due to rising demand in the U.S. and Hong Kong as well as Taiwan lifting a 16-year import ban. Japan regional carrier Air Do offers Yubari melon soda for free

TOKYO, June 9 — Air Do, a regional carrier based in Hokkaido, offers a local specialty drink for free: Yubari melon soda. Yubari city in the northern island of Hokkaido is famous for its melons and the name is in Japan’s geographical indication systems. The drink was jointly developed by Pokka Sapporo Food & Beverage, a Nagoya-based beverage maker, and the country’s largest farmers’ co-operative JA group. Yubari melon soda was released in 2009.

Japan’s parliament passes trade bills required to ratify TPP-11

TOKYO, June 30 — Japan’s parliament has passed trade bills that were required to ratify the revised Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), also known as the TPP-11, after the United States pulled out. The TPP-11 deal will enter into force 60 days after six of the 11 countries ratify the deal, a process that involves amending their respective domestic laws. With Mexico completing to ratify the deal in April, Japan will likely become the second country late July.
