Japan is haunted by chaos of storm as Typhoon Trami hits
MIYAZAKI, Oct. 2 ― Typhoon Trami hammered Japan’s southern islands, including Kyushu, before making high winds and heavy rain in mainland Japan during the final weekend of September. As a result of Trami, there have been widespread power failures in Kyushu and Okinawa islands, local utility companies said. The storm has moved out of the area, leaving behind massive destruction, including the region’s agriculture industry. Yoshiufmi Inoue, an 80-year-old farmer in Miyazaki prefecture, found some of his dairy barn’s roof disappeared and a falling utility pole crashed into another part of the roof. “I was very worried if my cows would be electrocuted,” until the local utility cut the power … Continue reading

Japan’s apple growers worry about increasing cheap imports
TOKYO, Sept. 20 ― Aomori is Japan’s top producing region of apples but increasing cheap imports from foreign countries during the summer months worry the region’s growers. In May-August 2017, Japan imported 3,648 metric tons of apples mainly from New Zealand, data from the finance ministry showed. The figure was the highest level since 2000. The import in the same period of 2018 is now expected to exceed the 2017 figure. Apple imports in summer have rapidly increased since 2012 when the bad weather that year led to a decline in production. That makes it more vulnerable to dropping apple prices, local growers point out. “The presence of imports has … Continue reading

Wakayama farmers promote locally-grown kaki on Halloween
TOKYO, Sept. 16 ― With Halloween looming, a Japanese farmers’ co-operative in Wakayama prefecture has held a promotional event in Tokyo to encourage visitors to eat local kaki. Halloween is marked on Oct. 31 every year, on the eve of the Christian feast of All Saints’ Day. Various Christian traditions developed around the holiday, such as lighting candles and offering prayers to the dead, which are still observed by many people today. And JA Wakayama has capitalized the Christian holiday since 2014, as its locally-grown kaki resembles a pumpkin’s shape and color. Kaki production in Wakayama in 2017 totaled 47,500 metric tons, accounting for about 20 percent of the country’s … Continue reading
