【News】 Small tomatoes with skin quality improving components hit the market (Sept. 11, 2013)
A Tokyo-based firm has developed various varieties of medium-size and mini tomatoes which include five times as much proline and lycopene as large-size tomatoes. Both components have skin quality improving effects, as proline is a main component of collagen and lycopene suppresses formation of melanin, a cause for spots and freckles. Pioneer Ecoscience Co., a seed company, started selling a package of three varieties in June, targeted at women who care highly about the quality of their skin. A liaison council for 11 cultural groups related to creation of movies, poems and other artworks issued a statement on Monday, September 9, opposing the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. The groups fear that strengthening regulations concerning copyright laws under the intellectual property area of the TPP agreement would make derivative works such as parody songs unlawful, even without accusation from copyright holders, hindering creation of such works. Edamame produced by an agricultural cooperative in Daisen, Akita Prefecture (JA Akita Obako), is increasingly used as ingredients for other food products, especially desserts. Firms and hotels in Akita are developing original premium sweets using processed edamame, contributing to making Akita-grown beans more appealing.
