Since the middle of this month, AEON Co., Ltd. began selling cut flowers with five-day quality assurance in 270 stores nationwide. It is attracting attention of flower growers and other retailers as the first such attempt by a major nationwide supermarket chain. When selling cut flowers, the stores will offer customers a small bag of quality preserver and explain appropriate ways to take care of them, including keeping water and vases clean. If the flowers wither within five days from purchase, the stores will either pay back the money or replace the flowers. Only 6,767 tons, or 27 percent of total imported rice amounting to 25,000 tons, were purchased through the second simultaneous buy-and-sell (SBS) orders conducted in fiscal 2013, amid lowering prices of domestically-grown rice, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced Tuesday, October 22. Purchases of rice imported under the minimum access scheme continued to fall short of the expected trading amount, following the first SBS trading conducted this year. In an effort to increase consumption of rice, a research institute based in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, developed a technology to create a gel-like material from rice which can be used as a substitute for wheat flour, the institute announced Tuesday, October 22. National Agriculture and Food Research Organization’s National Food Research Institute said it used high amylose rice with high starch content, such as Momiroman, a variety used mainly to produce rice flour or as feed for livestock.
