The Central Union of Agricultural Co-operatives (JA-Zenchu) and its national political body held a protest rally meeting on Thursday, April 3, in Tokyo to demand that sensitive agricultural products including beef be exempted from negotiations on Japan-Australia economic partnership agreement. In Kumamoto Prefecture, a major beef production area, prices of Japanese brown cattle plummeted after the liberalization of Japan’s beef market in 1991 followed by reduction in tariffs on beef imports. The National Federation of Agricultural Co-operative Associations (JA Zen-Noh) announced on Thursday, March 27, that it has been granted an exclusive license to use ThermoSeed – a new disinfection method for grain seeds – in Japan. JA Zen-Noh says the technology, which eradicates all kinds of diseases on seeds using hot humid air, can contribute to cutting costs and improving business conditions of rice and wheat farmers.
