Toyohiko Kagawa (1888-1960) was the person of “anyway, action”. At the age of 21, while studying as a Christian God student, he moved into the slums of Kobe city. While leading the labor movement in the Kansai region, he established consumption cooperatives in Osaka city and Kobe city. At first he started “movement of poverty relief”, and gradually he transfered the emphasis on “movement of poverty prevention”. When the Great Kanto Earthquake occured, he rushed to the site and provided soup kitchen for the next day. When considering the headwaters of the cooperative, it is difficult to compare Japan and Europe, especially Japan and UK. Because the era background is totally different. The Industrial Revolution, which began in around 1760 in UK, has promoted economic and social change. As a result, any farmers or any urban workers had to “work and live” as “wage workers”. Progress of the industrial revolution began to cause the wage problems and unemployment problem.Therefore workers established cooperatives to ensure the daily necessities such as groceries, and began the activities to protect their own life spontaneously. Ushi Masamune, a mascot character for the 11th National Competitive Exhibition of Wagyu, also known as the wagyu Olympics, has been created as a two-dimensional art on a rice field in the Semine district of the city of Kurihara, Miyagi Prefecture. Local rice farmers created the cow mascot, named after a famous shogun from the region Date Masamune, on an 80-hectare field using white and purple plants of four rice varieties to promote the exhibition to be held in Miyagi next year. Takashimaya Yokohama Store, one of the most popular department stores in Kanagawa prefecture, opened its beer garden named “Farmers’ Beer Garden” on the roof floor this June for the first time during past 58 years since its foundation. 【News】 Re-employed veteran workers support agricultural newcomers: JA Saku-Asama (July 18, 2016)
A farmer-support team of Saku-Asama Agricultural Cooperative (JA) in Nagano prefecture has achieved remarkable results in helping agricultural newcomers to settle in the JA’s territory. Members of the support team, veteran staff members who have been re-employed after retiring on reaching retirement age from the JA, maintain “face-to-face interactions” with member farmers including new entrants in farming. They work to support members’ farm managements by providing member farmers with advices based on their own experiences and local knowledge.
