The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) distributed a video named “OISHII TRIP (literally, a trip of enjoying tasty foods)” to YouTube and other video hosting sites on the Internet on March 1. In the video of “OISHII TRIP,” Hatsune Miku, one of the most popular virtual idols among net viewers, promotes products of agriculture, forestry and fisheries produced in various places in Japan as a charming tour guide of Japan. 【News】 Japan’s ruling party approves legislative amendment for allowing skilled foreigners to work on farms (March 1, 2017)

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) approved a bill of amendments to the Act on National Strategic Special Zones at a general meeting of its policy research council on February 28. The bill is to allow foreigners, who have completed a technical intern training program on farms, to work for agricultural management entities as dispatched workers only in special economic zones of the country. The overseas workers will be also able to get jobs related to processing of farm products, which is not currently allowed in the technical training programs. A new regulation permitting foreigners to work on farms will be put into the immigration control legislation as an exception. … Continue reading

【News】 White strawberries from Shizuoka proving popular in Tokyo (Feb. 28, 2017)

Suzuki Farm in Kakegawa, Shizuoka Prefecture, plans to increase cultivation of its white strawberries, which are marketed at a high price of 2,500 yen to 3,000 yen per box containing 15 to 18 berries. Now the strawberries are sold at some department stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area. The farm grew them experimentally last year, but plans to grow more this year because of strong sales. Although the farm considered exporting them to Hong Kong, it decided to concentrate on the domestic market due to their high unit price. 【News】 Japan’s Agricultural Standard System to be revised for governing standards of cultivation and transportation practices as well (March 1, 2017)

Shinzo Abe’s administration approved a bill of amendments to the Law Concerning Standardization, etc. of Agricultural and Forestry Products, or Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS) Law, at its cabinet meeting held on February 28, by which the government guarantees qualities of food products manufactured on the basis of certain quality standards. The amendments of the Law is to aim at additionally applying the JAS system to cultivation practices peculiar to Japan as well as transportation means for keeping freshness of products.
