【News】 Government to increase subsidy payment to “Super-Steep Slope Areas” (Aug. 21, 2014)

The government will take new measures from the 2015 fiscal year to pay more subsidies to agricultural activities in “super-steep areas” with extremely steep gradient through the direct payment system for intermediate and mountainous areas, which provides subsidies to agricultural activities in those areas, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) said Wednesday, August 20. They will provide more support to the areas in a worse condition that impose more burdens on farming. The necessary budget will be included in the fiscal 2015 budget requests. 【Editorial】 Say no to war on the 69th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II (Aug. 15, 2014)

Aug. 15 marks the 69th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. The tragic memories of the war are fading as the number of survivors is dwindling and more than 100 million of the Japanese are people born after the war. Amid weathering of wartime memories, the government formally reinterpreted the Constitution, overturning its core principle of pacifism to pave the way for the Self-Defense Forces to exercise military power abroad. Many people, including those who experienced war, have expressed concerns over the current social conditions which they say resemble the time when the war was looming. On the day commemorating the end of war, we should heed … Continue reading

【Editorial】 JA group’s self-reform should focus on unity and participation of farmers (Aug. 13, 2014)

The Central Union of Agricultural Co-operatives (JA-Zenchu) has set on discussing its own reform plan following the government’s decision to overhaul the JA group. The group is now facing an unprecedented challenge. We believe the keywords for reviewing the JA system is “participation” and “cohesive power.” By actively debating among the group how to transform itself, it should show a constructive path to make itself an organization indispensable for local communities. The JA group must proceed toward maintaining its cohesive power by making this time of crisis an opportunity to work together more closely. It should stick to its basic principles of autonomy, independence and mutual aid as a … Continue reading

Akira Banzai, president of the Central Union of Agricultural Co-operatives (JA-Zenchu), asked an advisory council on Friday, Aug. 8, to discuss self-reform of the JA group in response to the government’s plan to restructure the group, taking farmers’ standpoint into consideration. The council should “listen to the voices of co-operative members who engage in farming and (present measures to) cope with future changes as a JA group so that the group can play a significant role (in increasing farmers’ income),” Banzai told council members, according to JA-Zenchu officials. The council, chaired by Kazuo Kimura who heads JAs in Akita Prefecture, is expected to compile an interim report before mid-November, … Continue reading
