【Editorial】 Immediate withdrawal from TPP negotiations behind closed doors will be in the country’s best interest (July 27, 2013)

  The 18th round of the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks, with Japan on board for the first time, ended with member countries agreeing to accelerate discussions in such areas as market access including tariffs. As was expected, the negotiations were kept strictly confidential. All the Japanese government could do was to make a debut and gather information on the talks, without being able to put forward concrete policy proposals. Let us make one thing clear. There is no reason for Japan to join the agreement which leads to deterioration of this country, placing priority on the interests of global enterprises and ignoring the will of the people. 【News】 7,000 Hokkaido farmers and citizens protest against TPP talks (July 26, 2013)

  As many as 7,000 people gathered in Sapporo, Hokkaido, on Thursday, July 25, to stage a protest rally against Japan’s entry in to the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks, and pledged to strive to protect the nation’s largest agricultural region. The protest rally, held by 4 agricultural groups including the Hokkaido Prefectural Union of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA Hokkaido Chuokai), was supported by 43 groups such as the Hokkaido Prefectural Government, the Hokkaido Economic Federation, the Hokkaido Consumers’ Association and the Hokkaido Medical Association. “Hokkaido boasts a food self-sufficiency rate of nearly 200% and is an important agricultural region which supports the Japanese people’s lives,” said JA Hokkaido Chuokai Chairman Toshiaki … Continue reading

【News】 Japanese negotiators briefed by TPP countries day after its TPP debut (July 25, 2013)

  Satomi Tamai – Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia Japan received a briefing on Wednesday, July 24, by other members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade negotiations about the current status of the talks. As Japan became the 12th member in the already over 3-year-old negotiations the day before, the TPP participants specially arranged the “Japan session” to help Japan catch up with the negotiations. They were briefed on 7 fields, including market access covering tariff elimination, out of 21 fields covered under the pact, and briefings on the remaining fields will be given on the following day. 【News】 Local cooperatives of different industries set up prefectural-level organizations to strengthen cooperation following the International Year of Cooperatives in 2012 (July 24, 2013)

  Local cooperatives in as many as 10 prefectures have established or plan to create an organization to continue exchange activities between different cooperatives, which became active during the International Year of Cooperatives (IYC) last year, The Japan Agricultural News learned. The IYC was launched by the United Nations to raise public awareness of the contributions of cooperative enterprises. Inspired by the move, many Japanese cooperatives, such as Japan Agricultural Cooperative (JA), Japan Fisheries Cooperative and consumers’ cooperative, jointly implemented various programs including working to set up lecture courses on cooperative studies at local universities and conducting mutual visitation among cooperatives of different industries. 【News】 The Japan Agricultural News and the agricultural ministry announce winners of this year’s poster design contest advocating safety of farmworkers (July 23, 2013)

  Kie Nakauchi, a 31-year-old company employee of Nabari, Mie Prefecture, won the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Prize in the poster design contest for 2013, jointly held by The Japan Agricultural News and the agricultural ministry to promote safe working conditions for agricultural workers.The poster designed by Nakauchi depicts a silhouette of a farmer coming home in the twilight to be welcomed by his daughter, and comes with a phrase “Always keep your mind on working safely.
