As of January 31, 2016, 15,920 hectares, 74 percent of farm lands devastated by the tsunami waves triggered by the March 2011 Japan earthquake have been recovered in disaster-stricken prefectures, according to a report released on March 1 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF). MAFF’s minister Hiroshi Moriyama said at the press conference, “Recovery works are progressing as planned. Farmers will be able to grow crops next year on more than 80 percent of farm lands hit by the tsunami.” On March 11, Japan will mark the fifth anniversary of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Choe Okuno, president of JA-ZENCHU, a representative body of Japanese agricultural cooperative (JA) organizations, said the JA group will make every effort to successfully carry out its self-reform scheme at a joint meeting of governmental top officials and representatives of private sectors, which was held on March 4 at the Prime Minister’s Office, in Nagata-cho, Tokyo. ZEN-NOH (National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations), a business organization of agricultural cooperatives (JA) in Japan, decided to establish a model overseas base in Singapore and build up an effective system for marketing Japanese farm products from the base by 2018. In a next three-three plan beginning from April 2016, ZEN-NOH will promote exports of farm products shipped from Japan via its overseas base by improving processing facilities in Singapore as well as by expanding a network of distribution channels for Japanese products in the Asian region during the next three years. 【News】 Members of Female Farmer Project demonstrate their achievements during past three years (Feb. 28, 2016)
Members of Female Farmer Project celebrated its third anniversary at a gathering held on Feb. 27 at Tokyo to exchange views on achievements of their activities during past three years. The Project, a nationwide network of young female farmers, has now increased their members up to 400 females by ten times since it was organized under the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 2013. It has also 25 support members of agricultural companies. For about two years, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has been offering technical assistance to the farm during the fall and winter fallow periods to grow broccolis.
