【News】 “Cooperatives” added to list of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (Dec. 15, 2016)
Japan Joint Committee of Cooperatives (JJC), formed mainly by national organizations of agricultural, consumers, and fishery cooperatives, made an announcement on December 14 that “cooperatives” were registered as an intangible cultural heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO). 【News】 Foreign skilled workers likely to be allowed to work for Japanese farmers in national strategic special zones in fiscal 2017 (Dec. 13, 2016)
The Japanese Government decided on December 12 to allow skilled workers from abroad to work on farms in national strategic special zones. The government plans to submit an amendment to the related law during the next ordinary Diet session early next year, aiming at an application of the amended law in fiscal 2017. Applicants for the new system will be limited to foreign workers who have studied professional knowledge on agriculture. They will be able to work for agricultural corporations and other farmers in three to five years. ZEN-NOH (National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations) or a national business organization of agricultural cooperatives in Japan made an announcement on December 6 that it will establish a cooperative corporation with Enviro Tech Chemical Services, Inc., a chemical manufacturer based at Modesto in California, USA, and Ozu Corporation at Chuo ward, Tokyo, a marketing company of nonwoven fabric materials. On November 4, 2016, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) named the first five rural areas to receive the ministry’s “Savor Japan” certification for their excellent regional initiatives to promote the attractiveness of the regions by combining their local resources including foods, the agricultural industry and local scenery. The first five regions accredited in the governmental program launched in 2016 are Tokachi in Hokkaido, Ichinoseki and Hiraizumi in Iwate Prefecture, Tsuruoka in Yamagata Prefecture, Maze in Gifu Prefecture, and Nishi-Awa in Tokushima Prefecture.
