【News】Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters to block unauthorized cultivation of Japanese agricultural crops in foreign countries (April 27, 2017)
The Japanese government decided on April 26 to strengthen its support measures to be taken for variety registration of Japanese agricultural crops in foreign countries. The measures aim at protecting Japanese breeders’ rights of marketing seeds, plants and harvests of the crops concerned by registering the plant patents with overseas authorities in order to block unauthorized cultivation of those crops in foreign countries. The government plans to revise its Intellectual Property Promotion Plan next month, in which the new support measures are to be put into practice. 【News】 Japanese government to consider stricter mandatory labeling of GM foods (April 27, 2017)
The Consumer Affairs Agency of Japan is now considering expanding the scope of mandatory labeling of so-called GM foods that contain ingredients derived from genetically modified organisms. Under the mandatory labeling system, eight kinds of agricultural products, including soybean, corn, potato, rapeseed, and cottonseed, are currently subject to the labeling requirement. Furthermore, GM labeling is also required for 33 food items containing ingredients of these 8 kinds of farm crops such as tofu (bean curd), natto (fermented soybeans), miso (soybean paste) and snack food. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) revealed its latest report on exports of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the first two months of 2017. Among those products, exports of Japanese green teas reached to the largest value of 2 billion yen, 22 percent up over the same period in the previous year. Although the exports of the green teas during this period declined in quantity by nearly 10 percent, expensive items of Japanese teas such as powdered green tea and “gyokuro (highest-quality green tea)” have been gaining popularity particularly among European consumers. 【News】Norinchukin, Nokyo Tourist to send rural trip videos overseas to spur inbound tourism (Apr. 22, 2017)
The Central Cooperative Bank for Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery (the Norinchukin Bank), Nokyo Tourist Corporation and two non-agricultural companies have launched a joint program to bring more inbound travelers to rural areas in Japan. The plan says some overseas travelers are offered monitor tours in rural areas in Japan to be filmed in short videos that show how they enjoyed the trips in Japan. The video clips are then provided to approximately 100 tour companies mainly in Asia to help them include those areas as new destinations in their Japan tours. 【News】Scarecrow of the future – Akita Prefectural University develops a robot to drive away wildlife from crops (April 11, 2017)
Akita Prefectural University is working on developing a robotic scarecrow to move around the fields and scare off wild animals which cause damage to crops. Takashi Saito, 47, associate professor at the university’s Department of Machine Intelligence and Systems Engineering specializing in robots, has created three eight-legged and four-legged prototype models, with an aim to complete the robot next year. Saito began developing the prototypes last year based on radio-controlled fighting robots. He said he plans to make practical models equipped with artificial intelligence, adopting moves and designs that wild animals dislike.
