【Opinion】 Experts in South Korea call for policy shift away from globalization and TPP (Nov. 30, 2016)

[By Zhezhu Jin, The Japan Agricultural News Staff Writer] South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye on Nov. 29 expressed her intention to resign, as hundreds of thousands of people joined huge street rallies across the country demanding that she leave office. What was at the root of the swelling protests was the people’s anger towards the Park administration which failed to take effective measures to cope with growing wealth inequality and unemployment among young people. Farmers are strongly criticizing the unprecedentedly low prices of rice. It appears that the worldwide anti-globalization movement which is seen in Great Britain and the United States has spread to South Korea. The Japan Agricultural News … Continue reading

【Report】Angry voters, including farmers, elect Trump U.S. president(Nov.16&17,2016)

[Washington, D.C./ By Ed Maixner, Journalist] In upset surprising pollsters and politicians in the United States and worldwide, Donald Trump, the American Republican Party candidate, won four years as president of the United States this week, riding to victory on a tidal wave of angry working class voters fed up with the central government in Washington, DC. Many still smart from the big recession of 2009 that they believe has cost them jobs and economic security, and they blame political leaders. Although Clinton won the usually Democratic-leaning west coast and northeast regions of the U.S., Trump swept up strong margins across all southern states and nearly all other inland states, which … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Unreasonable intervention in agricultural cooperatives’ management should never be allowed (Nov. 12, 2016)

The government’s Regulatory Reform Promotion Council has recently presented a draft proposal on reforming management of agricultural cooperatives. The key points include abolishing the consignment sales system of the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations (ZEN-NOH) and making the organization shift within a year to the system of purchasing all the products, as well as turning primary farm coops (JAs) into agents, instead of providers, of financial services. These are extremely unreasonable proposals that totally ignore the functions and roles of ZEN-NOH’s sales business and JAs’ financial business. Such denial of cooperative businesses and intervention in management of an independent private organization should not be allowed for whatever reason. The … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Wave of “nohaku” farm stays approaches (Sept. 28, 2016)

The government has set on boosting so-called “nohaku” farm stays to attract visitors, especially those from abroad, to rural villages as a key measure to revitalize local areas. The agriculture ministry and related ministries plan to largely increase budgetary allocations in line with the government’s tourism vision put together in spring. However, it is not easy to boost farm stays of foreign visitors who are not familiar with the Japanese language and culture. The rural community needs to work together to help visitors appreciate the Japanese countryside, and the government must come up with effective support measures. The administration under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pledged to accelerate its Abenomics … Continue reading
