A miller develops Japanese flour for Italian pizza margharita
TOKYO, March 8 — A Japanese milling company has developed domestically-produced wheat flour used to make pizza napoletana, commonly known outside Italy as a pizza margherita. Ebetsu flour milling Co. is now seeking certification for its new product from an Italian organization to be considered as flour for authentic pizza napoletana. “We want to contribute for expanding use of domestically produced wheat,” said Ebetsu President Toshiyuki Abiko. “Just knowing that we’re part of it makes us proud.” Japan is one of the largest wheat importing countries, and domestic production only accounts for about 10 percent of its total what supply. Hollywood stars enjoy Miyazaki wagyu beef at 2018 Oscars
TOKYO, March 7 — Japan has celebrated its success at the Oscars after Miyazaki wagyu beef was served at the post-Academy Awards feast in Hollywood. Miyazaki wagyu beef and Kirishima, a distilled liquor from Miyazaki prefecture, featured on the menu at the post-Academy Awards party. Around 1,500 guests got a chance to mingle after the 90th Oscars ceremony on March 4 in Los Angeles. “We’re really excited that our beef was selected,” Japanese Agriculture Minister Ken Saito said at a March 6 press conference. “The Oscars offered a very good opportunity to promote our foods and expand our food exports,” he added.

Japan’s soymilk output increases on health-conscious lifestyle
TOKYO, Feb. 27 — Japan’s soymilk output has shown a clear upward path, marking its ninth consecutive year of growth, boosted by a rise in health-conscious lifestyles and increasing consumer awareness on lactose intolerance. Japanese soy milk production rose 8.1% to a record 339,281 kiloliters in 2017 from a year earlier, according to the Japan Soymilk Association. “There is rising health consciousness among consumers and an increasing number of people drink soymilk regularly,” an official from the soymilk association said. “Soymilk is also widely used as an ingredient for cooking at home and restaurants,” he added. Tourists’ spending on foods in Japan hits a record high in 2017
TOKYO, Feb. 12 — Overseas tourists’ spending on foods in Japan surged to a record high in 2017, with the growing worldwide popularity of traditional Japanese cuisine, called washoku. While visiting Japan, overseas tourists spent a record 345.6 billion yen in 2017, up 19% from a year earlier, preliminary estimates from the agriculture ministry showed. Tourists’ spending on Japanese snacks totaled 158.9 billion yen, while that on other foods including sake, tobacco and beverage products was 186.8 billion yen. Miyazaki-brand beef included in official Oscars 2018 after-party menu
MIYAZAKI, March 1 – A brand beef from Miyazaki Prefecture is going to be served at the reception after the 90th Academy Awards ceremony in the U.S. on March 4, 2018. It’s the first time for the authentic wagyu brand beef from the prefecture to be included in the buffet menu for the festivity for the film industry.
