【News】Men in straw costumes pray to god for safe year with no fire hazard Yonekawa-no-Mizukaburi in Tome-shi, Miyagi Prefecture(Feb. 14, 2016)

Every year in early February, a group of men dressed in straw hats and coats appear in Yonekawa, Towa-cho, Tome-shi, Miyagi Prefecture. The men in the unique costumes parade through the streets to thank fire for the gift it offers to human life and pray to god for a safe year free from fire hazard. The amusing event is called “Yonekawa-no-Mizukaburi,” which literary means “a water festival of Yonekawa” in Japanese. “Ho, ho, ho!” The thirty half-naked men in the straw costumes shouted loudly to signal the start of the festival. 【News】 MAFF builds up system for attracting more foreign tourists into “Most Exciting Japanese Villages” (Feb. 13, 2016)

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) plans to create a new system of developing an inbound tourism market at rural societies in the country. MAFF expects the system will be effective to authorize “Most Exciting Japanese Villages” (provisional name) by the way of comprehensively assessing a total value of rural resources in each applicant village such as traditional diets and farm production, cultures related to farmers’ activities, and availabilities of attractive landscapes. Senior special writer, Masaru Yamada The other day, I saw extremely cheap Italy-made cans of tomatoes sold at a supermarket in my neighborhood. The 400 gram cans were priced around ¥80 each. I bought them, opened them at home and found a couple of cylinder-shaped tomatoes packed in tomato juice. I said to my colleagues that I was shocked by the low price, and was told that it is “something quite ordinary.” Indeed, it looks like canned tomatoes are available at such prices at most online shopping sites. 【News】 The biggest food trade fair commemorates 50th anniversary in Tokyo Big Sight (Feb. 11, 2016)

Nearly 1,900 companies and organizations of food industry including wholesalers participated in one of the biggest business events in Japan, “Supermarket Trade Show 2016,” opened on Feb. 10 at Tokyo Big Sight. They exhibited their food products to have business talks mainly with people of retailers and supermarkets during three days through Feb. 12. The trade show was organized by an apex body of supermarkets, New Supermarket Association of Japan (NSAJ), to celebrate its 50th anniversary. 【NEWS】 Ice skating rink at paddy field reopens in Kawamata, Fukushima Pref. (Feb. 10, 2016)

An outdoor ice skating rink set up at a paddy field, known as “tanbo (paddy field) rink,” reopened this winter at the Yamakiya district of Kawamata-machi in Fukushima prefecture after a five-year hiatus caused by the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant of Tokyo Electric Power Company in March 2011. Decontamination work was completed in the district last summer. And preparation for reopening the rink was also made by local leaders who wished to revitalize their rural community.
