【News】Giant, seedless grapes shipped in Nagano Prefecture (Sept.16,2016)

A farmer of Nagano Prefecture shipped for the first time this year Tears Red, a new variety of grapes that is about the size of a plum. The average weight of a Tears Red berry is about 50 grams, with some growing to a near-record level of 5 centimeters in diameter and weighing more than 100 grams, compared with an average weight of 15 to 20 grams for large-size grapes. The grapes can be eaten without peeling. 【News】 Maximum of 3600 yen per 60-kg rice bag of “Adjustment money” paid to wholesalers: Sources tell to Japan Agri. News (Sep. 23, 2016)

In shady transactions of intentionally mispriced rice imported under the state-controlled “simultaneous buy and sell” (SBS) system, it was revealed on September 22, one of rice wholesalers in western Japan had been paid by trading houses a maximum of around 60 yen per kilogram of rice under the context of what they call “adjustment money.” The amount of the “adjustment money” is converted to some 3600 yen per “hyo,” 60-kilogram sack of rice. With the “adjustment money” paid by trading firms, the wholesaler sold the SBS imported rice to users of the food service industry at prices lower than successful bid prices announced by the Government. Kobe City Government in Hyogo prefecture is now constructing a roadside station for marketing “Kobe brand goods” such as local farm products, Japanese sake (wine) and local wine to international tourists who have been tremendously increasing in recent years. Multi-language information service will be provided to those tourists through its website as well as a concierge office to be set up at the station. The City Government aims to increase visitors to various kinds of tourist farms in the city. 【News】 Lunch comes on wheels from all over the world to Tokyo (Sep. 4, 2016)

The number of gourmet food trucks is growing in the central part of Tokyo. At lunch time at several locations in downtown Tokyo, you’ll find groups of small trucks with on-board kitchens, which serve a various kind of dishes cooked on the wheels. They are called “Kitchen Cars” in Japanese and their menu items hail from all over the world and include not only Japanese food but also Western, Chinese and Ethnic food, successfully drawing the attentions of foodies in Tokyo.

【Editorial】Thorough probe necessary on suspected kickbacks undercutting prices of foreign rice (Sep. 16,2016)

It was recently revealed that the system of setting prices of imported rice through state-run auctions, designed to keep the prices at certain levels, has not been working due to kickbacks. It is suspected that foreign rice is traded in the Japanese market at much lower prices than domestically-grown rice. Japan has agreed under the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal to import some 80,000 tons of rice through simultaneous buy and sell (SBS) orders, but the government’s claim that the impact of such imports on domestic rice is zero now sounds highly dubious.
