Natto sales hit record, once again powering as healthy food
TOKYO, July 16 — Growth in sales of fermented soybeans, or naotto, has rocketed over the past few years, as Japanese consumers are getting more conscious of healthy eating, transforming once the soul food into the country’s healthy food. Typically, natto is served as part of a Japanese breakfast style, which includes rice, miso soup and grilled fish. [By Masaru Kaneko, Professor of Keio University] Japan and the European Union recently reached a basic accord regarding the Economic Partnership Agreement. However, although the deal includes decisions that could hit much harder on domestic farmers than the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, the negotiations were all held behind closed doors with barely any debate conducted on the issue. ZEN-NOH elects Yutaka Nagasawa as new Chairman
TOKYO, July 26 ― National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations (ZEN-NOH) elected Yutaka Nagasawa a (Chairman of Administrative Committee of Yamagata Prefectural Headquarters) as new Chairman of ZEN-NOH supervisory board on July 25, 2017, succeeding ex-Chairman who has finished out his term. Nagasawa stressed at the press conference that he is willing to create new, fresh ZEN-NOH.

Doronko Matsuri in Seiyo, Ehime Prefecture
EHIME, July 9 ― Doronko Matsuri (mud festival) was held on July 2, 2017, at Mishima Shrine in Shirokawa, Seiyo, Ehime Prefecture, as an annual event to appreciate the hard work of farmers who have finished rice planting and to pray for good harvesting of the year. The holy performance included a demonstration of traditional Ushi-no-shirokaki (plowing by bulls) by local farmers in the rice paddy that belongs to the shrine. Another highlight of the festival that thoroughly excited the visitors was the comical demonstration of farm works by young local villagers in the muddy field. Taiwan to reopen market to Japanese beef after 16-year ban
TOKYO, July 19 — Taiwan will lift bans on imports of Japanese beef as early as September, with a condition of a 30-month age limit, officials said. It will be 16 years after this once major market shut its doors. Taiwan banned import of Japanese beef in 2001 due to an outbreak of mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), in Japan. Since 2004, Tokyo has requested Taipei to lift the ban, and the two have discussed food safety conditions for imports.
