The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Allied Forces General Headquarters (GHQ), and agriculture organizations began propaganda activities to spread nogyokyodokumiai (agricultural cooperatives), along with the establishment of the Nogyokyodokumiai (agricultural cooperatives) Law. On August 1, 1947, the press release about the law was done. Thereafter, radio, newspaper, and distribution of brochures were used at the time. Regarding propaganda activities, exceptional enthusiasm and efforts were poured. The ministry printed 5.7 million copies of the brochure “nogyokyodokumiai no iroha (ABCs of nogyokyodokumiai (agricultural cooperatives)),” and distributed them to all farmers through the local offices of the prefectures. Two legislations aiming for management reconstruction Facing financial difficulties, in November 1950, the third National Nogyokyodokumiai (agricultural cooperatives) Representatives Congress was held. The congress made resolution of development of “nogyokyodokumiai (agricultural cooperatives) progressive reform movement.” The resolution included 7 items of reconstruction development plan, such as “comprehensive plan of management business”, ” enhancement of the funds”, ” thorough nogyokyodokumiai (agricultural cooperatives) education.” Management slump of nogyokyodokumiai (agricultural cooperatives) had come to the point where reconstruction of their own was unable. Inaugurated Zenchu (Central Union of Nogyokyodokumiai (agricultural cooperatives)), guidance institution Founders meeting of Zenkokushidonogyokumiairengokai (Zenshiren) (National Guidance Federation of Nogyokyodokumiai (agricultural cooperatives)), predecessor of Zenkokunogyokyodokumiaichuokai (Zenchu) (Central Union of Nogyokyodokumiai (agricultural cooperatives)), was about to be opened. Just before, in Hakone of Kanagawa prefecture, noseikyogikai (Agricultural Policy Council) based on former nokai (chamber of agriculture) gathered the people who agreed with the establishment of organization centered to production guidance. Consumer Affairs Agency to adopt stricter rules for labeling of non-genetically modified foods
TOKYO, Feb. 1 – The Consumer Affairs Agency’s expert panel agreed on Jan. 31 to introduce a stricter standard to certify non-genetically modified food products, allowing only foods with technically zero genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to be labeled GM-free. Under the current rules, foods containing 5 percent or less of GM ingredients can bear the GM-free label. For instance, soybeans can be labeled non-GM even if the product contained up to 5 percent of GM beans due to unintentional mixing in the process of production or distribution. Japan tackles wildlife overpopulation to reduce crop damages
TOKYO, Jan. 20 — Japan’s agriculture ministry is stepping up efforts to reduce crop damage caused by overpopulated wildlife across the country. Economic losses caused by wildlife was estimated at 17.2 billion yen in 2016, down 3% from a year earlier, according to the ministry. Deer and wild boar accounted for nearly a half of the overall losses. Crop damage caused by wild animals has declined from the peak of 23.9 billion yen in 2010, yet the level of farm losses affected by them remains high, the ministry said.
