【News】 Whose Heart is Beating Faster? (Aug. 9, 2014)

Kotaro Yamada On August 8, 2014, National Veterinary Assay Laboratory (NVAL), Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan, had its open day for school children and offered the children opportunities to learn the work of animal doctors at the laboratory in Kokubunji-shi, Tokyo. The lab invited 20 local elementary and junior high school students and they thoroughly enjoyed being “small animal doctors” in white coats. Their first learning materials were small animals. Small doctors were asked to check the heart sounds of guinea pigs and chicks with stethoscopes. “Their hearts are beating so quickly!” they reported excitedly. The next task was checking chicken eggs to see if they are … Continue reading

【News】 Rice dealers predict price decline after fall (Aug. 8, 2014)

Concerns among rice dealers are growing over possible price declines after the harvest season, with some of them saying that rice wholesalers will not be able to survive unless measures to boost rice consumption are taken. According to a survey by the Rice Stable Supply Support Organization released Thursday, Aug. 7, more rice traders think the supply-demand balance for rice will loosen in the coming three months, as the harvesting season nears. The diffusion index for rice prices and supply-demand balance for August, September and October marked 23, the lowest since the organization began compiling the data in March 2012. The figure is down 5 points from the previous month, … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Increase in feed grain production necessary to boost food self-sufficiency (Aug. 7, 2014)

Food self-sufficiency rate in Japan remained at 39 percent measured by calorific intake in fiscal 2013 for the fourth consecutive year. The rate – the lowest among major industrialized nations – is far from the government’s target of reaching the 50 percent mark by fiscal 2020. This is totally absurd. Considering the predicted worldwide food shortage, we have no time to spare to reinforce agricultural production through strategic use of rice paddies. Calorie-based food self-sufficiency rates of major industrialized nations in 2011 were 258 percent in Canada, 129 percent in France and 127 percent in the United States. Even for nations with sufficiency rates below 100 percent, the figures … Continue reading

【News】 Food self-sufficiency rate stays at 39 percent for four consecutive years (Aug. 6, 2014)

Food self-sufficiency rate in Japan marked 39 percent measured by calorific intake in fiscal 2013 for the fourth consecutive year, failing to increase due to decline in wheat and soybean production, according to farm ministry data released Tuesday, August 5. When measured by production value, domestic supply covered a record low of 65 percent of consumption, down 2 percentage points from fiscal 2012, affected by shrinking output of milk and other dairy products. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries hopes to raise food self-sufficiency to 50 percent of calorific intake and 70 percent in terms of value by fiscal 2020. The goal, widely deemed unachievable, indicates an urgent … Continue reading
