Strong sales of Japanese rice grains, beef, and tea leaves push Japan’s export of agricultural, forest and fishery products up 4.5% in 2017 1st half

TOKYO, Aug. 11 — According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan (MAFF), Japan’s export of agricultural, forest and fishery products and food during the first half of the year 2017, from January to June, was up 4.5% on a year-over-year basis to 378.6 billion yen. Export of rice grains, beef, and tea leaves was especially strong because of the popularity of Japanese food outside the country. Economic revitalization minister says revisions to the TPP agreement would be minimal

TOKYO, Aug. 10 – Toshimitsu Motegi, economic revitalization minister in charge of measures related to trade agreements, said in a group interview on Aug. 9 with The Japan Agricultural News and other media outlets that revisions to the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement, which the United States has withdrawn from, will be kept to “the minimum necessary.” Regarding the economic partnership agreement between Japan and the European Union, Motegi said the government will take all the necessary measures to promote expansion of Japan’s agricultural exports and maintain domestic production of important farm products – namely rice, wheat, beef and pork, dairy products and sugar. Tokyo Olympic Village likely to consume 13 tons of rice and 19 tons of beef, report says

TOKYO Aug. 8 - The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games said on August 7, 2017, that Tokyo Olympic Village is likely to need approximately 600 tons of agricultural, forestry and fishery products to provide meals to Olympians. The committee has reached this number by adding up item-by-item estimates that include 13 tons of rice and grains and 19 tons of beef. It looked at the quantities of food offered at Olympics, Paralympics and other international tournaments in the past to make the forecast. Gulf Japan Food Fund invests in new bakery chain in Dubai to expand food and agricultural exports from Japan

TOKYO, Aug. 2 – On August 1, 2017, the Gulf Japan Food Fund (GJFF), a private equity fund established by the Central Cooperative Bank for Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery (the Norinchukin Bank), Mizuho Bank, and other investors, said that it invested in Yamanote Atelier Restaurant, a firm developing a new bakery business in Dubai, the U.A.E, in July this year. Yamanote Atelier Restaurant is a new bakery chain created around the concept of “Japanese bakery.” It emphasizes high quality and food safety and imports ingredients such as wheat and beverage from Japan.
