FUKUSHIMA, Aug. 29 – Sunflowers are in full bloom in the town of Okuma, Fukushima Prefecture, where all the residents have been unable to return after the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant accident brought about by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. A group of 50 residents sowed the seeds on a 1.8-hectare land in June in an effort to maintain the weakening ties between the town and the evacuated residents, as more than seven years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake. Japan’s JA-ZENCHU Chairman Nakaya reflects on one year
TOKYO, Aug. 8 ― One year ago, when he was selected as Japan’s most powerful farm group chairman, Toru Nakaya promised to commit the group’s self-reform during his term. Nakaya, chairman of the Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA-ZENCHU), now tells The Japan Agricultural News that his group is “very much focused on continuing to reform.” “The JA group self-reform will never end,” Nakaya said. Some Japanese food exports hit record high in first half of 2018
TOKYO, Aug. 5 ― Some of Japanese food exports in the first six months of 2018 broke the previous record set last year, as the popularity of Japanese dish, or washoku, has hit new heights around the globe in recent years. Shipments of Japanese beef, for example, jumped 37% to 10.8 billion yen in the first half from the same period a year earlier, data from the finance ministry showed. TOKYO, Aug. 9 ― Japan’s food self-sufficiency rate remained the second lowest level in 2017, due to steadily declining consumption of rice, the country’s staple food, and increasing meat imports, despite a recover of harvest in northern Japan. The calorie-based rate of food self-sufficiency in 2017 remained flat at 37.78 percent, followed by 37.58 percent in 2016, the agriculture ministry said on Aug. 8.
