Okinawa Wagyu beef finds ways into Hong Kong cruise ships, JA Okinawa’s 3-month sales reach JPY 10 million
OKINAWA, Aug. 25 -Sales of Wagyu beef by an agricultural corporative in Okinawa (JA Okinawa) for Hong Kong cruise ships are doing well. JA Okinawa began offering the beef for the cruise service provider based in Hong Kong in April this year, and in the first three months, it sold more than 10 million yen. Guests on the boat need to pay extra to select premium dining options that include the beef from Okinawa. However, many people still want to spend the additional fee, 10,000 yen, on top of the cruise fare. Because of such popularity, the number of cruise ships that offer the Okinawan beef increased in July to … Continue reading

Japan’s farm group chairman raises concern on US trade talks
TOKYO, Sept. 7 ― Japan’s largest farmers’ group chairman, Toru Nakaya, has told Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that the country’s farmers are concerned if Tokyo would accept the U.S. demands under a new framework on bilateral trade issues. The meeting took place at the prime minister’s office on Sept. 6, one day before the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership race campaign officially began. Abe has made his bid for a third term as the LDP president and thus retain his position as the prime minister. “During our meeting, the prime minister assumed me that he would not accept any terms with the U.S. that go beyond the TPP,” said … Continue reading

TOKYO, Aug. 31 ― Japan’s governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has pressed the government’s top official to stick to the national interests, as Tokyo is set to hold its second ministerial meeting with the U.S. under a new framework to discuss “free, fair and reciprocal (FFR)” trade. The LDP’s internal trade task force, which deals with the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), held a meeting on Aug. 30. During the meeting, the LDP lawmakers reminded Economy Minister Toshimitsu Motegi that the upcoming ministerial talks with the U.S. should not become the preliminary talks on launching an official free trade negotiation between the two. “We heard … Continue reading

Dead wild boar in central Japan tests positive for swine fever
GIFU, Sept. 16 ― The Gifu prefectural government said on Sept. 15 that the carcass of a wild boar found in Gifu city in earlier September was tested positive for classical swine fever, also known as hog cholera. The announced came as the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) confirmed swine fever virus in the final analysis. The swine fever is unrelated to the African swine fever that has broken out in China and other countries in Easter Europe. Swine fever occurs among pigs and wild boar and is not infectious to humans, but it can be devastating the pork industry because pork sales would be severely disrupted. The … Continue reading
